The Remainder of 2013

Here is a quick look at our meeting calendar for the remainder of 2013! Tuesday, November 26th:  The Savannah Writers Group will meet at 7PM at The Atlanta Bread Company. DECEMBER Tuesday, December 10th:  The Savannah Writers Group will meet at 7PM at The Crystal Beer Parlor, for a Holiday Gathering! Check out their website to preview the menu. They are located at 301 West Jones Street Savannah, GA 31401 (and have an actual parking lot!). As the fourth Tuesday in December is Christmas Eve, I daresay we will not meet that evening. Be thinking of program ideas for 2014!

SWG Meeting: Tuesday August 13th

YES, we will be meeting Tuesday, August 13th at 7 PM at the Atlanta Bread Company! The Savannah Writers Group meets every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. I know sometimes there is confusion, but we do not meet "every other Tuesday", we meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays each month. Also, we had previously decided to cancel the August 13th meeting and have a Saturday social gathering instead, but that idea has been scrapped for now. In fact, let's discuss ideas for the summer social when we meet on Tuesday, August 13th! I'll see you there! Happy writing!

SWG Meeting: Tuesday, July 9th

The next meeting of the Savannah Writers Group is scheduled for Tuesday, July 9th at 7 PM. It will be held at the Atlanta Bread Company. Bring your ideas for future programs and any writing you would like to share. For the second meeting of July, scheduled for Tuesday, July 23rd our very own Edward Smith will be our speaker. UPDATE: This just in! Author Doug Burnett will be our guest speaker on Tuesday, June 25th! Check out his book: A Light in the Dark . Ready for a challenge? The next meeting of the Savannah Writers Groups happens tomorrow, Tuesday, June 25th at 7 PM at the Atlanta Bread Company. If you are up to the challenge, write your "Six-Word Story" to share with the group and bring any other writing you might like to share. If you desire feedback, please bring enough copies to share with everyone, as well as copies of the critique sheet. We look forward to seeing you! What is a "Six-Word Story"? Check it out here . We're proud to welcome guest speaker, Mike D'Ambrosio, a published science fiction novelist and screenwriter to the first meeting in May, which happens Tuesday, May 14th. The Savannah writers group meets every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 7 PM at The Atlanta Bread Company. D'Ambrosio is author of the Fractured Time Trilogy and Space Frontiers Series.He comes to us all the way from Philadelphia. Please check out his website. This will be an meeting devoted to sharing your writing – any format at all, so bring your writing in all its many facets. Remember to bring ten copies if you want written critiques. SWG Meeting, Tuesday, April 9 - POETRY SLAM

The next meeting of the Savannah Writers Group will be at 7:00 PM, Tuesday, April 9 th , at the Atlanta Bread Company in the Twelve Oaks Shopping Center. Time to get busy! Our next meeting is a poetry slam! Bring your best iambic pentameter, haiku, free verse, anything your heart desires! From the serious to the silly, all are welcome! You may also bring a SHORT poem by another poet to share and discuss why you like it. Also, note that we will be having a speaker May 14 th . Mike D’Ambrosio is an accomplished writer of science fiction from Philadelphia. In addition, please bring at least ten copies of any  writing you wish to share. If you would like written feedback, please bring at least ten copies of the attached critique sheet. We look forward to seeing you there!

Plot Problems, Technical Difficulties & The Next Meeting

Chapter 1: Plot Problems Over at her wonderful blog, "Pub Rants", literary agent Kristin Nelson illuminated a method for detecting manuscript problems, which anyone can try with the help of a friend. Here is what she said: Just recently I did a workshop where I had the participants partner with another person in the class and exchange the first 30 pages of their manuscripts. The assignment I gave them was to read the 30 pages all the way through once. After that was completed, to go back and start rereading. On the second read, I asked them to go page by page and outline the plot points in a neat list list by chapter.  I stressed that they were not summarizing the chapter. Simply listing the action found in it.  Then I had them email me the outlines before I started reading. The next meeting of the Savannah Writers Group will be Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at 7:00 PM at the Atlanta Bread Company in the Twelve Oaks Shopping Center in Savannah. We will be planning the next program, so please bring your ideas. If you would like to share your writing for feedback, please print enough copies of your piece and the critique sheet to go around (ten each is suggested). We look forward to seeing you there!

SWG Meeting, Jan. 22 - "Pulling Memories From The Distant Past" Workshop

Our own Sally Klein will conduct a mini-workshop about writing from your childhood, “Pulling Memories from the Distant Past” that promises to be fun, poignant, and self-revealing.

The next meeting of the Savannah Writer’s Group will be held October 23 at 7:00 PM, at the Atlanta Bread Company. Our very own published member and keeper of the SWG blogspot/website, Sasha McBrayer, will be our guest speaker. By popular request, Sasha will be speaking on writing effective dialogue. Sasha asks that you bring at least six copies of one page of dialogue that you have written, perhaps from a current work in progress. After her brief talk, volunteer readers will have the opportunity to share and receive critiques from Sasha and the group. Our friends at the Bread Company are kind enough to allow us to meet in their space gratis. Please patronize them appropriately. As per our guidelines, we will have a brief business meeting and regular sharing if time permits after the speaker. This means you can share other things you've written, as usual. We have tentatively scheduled a dialogue critique for the Oct. 23rd meeting.

The Savannah Writers Group is pleased to host guest speaker Mark Murphy at the October 9 meeting. Dr. Mark Murphy, local gastroenterologist and writer, will speak to the Savannah Writers Group at their regular meeting October 9, 7:00 PM at the Atlanta Bread Company in the Twelve Oaks Shopping Center, Abercorn Street, Savannah, GA. Dr. Murphy is receiving increasing recognition for his writing and is scheduled to appear at the 2013 Savannah Book festival with his new book, The Shadow Man , a mystery set in Savannah. Congrats, Lynne! Meeting Tonight!

We'd like to extend a hearty congratulations to Savannah Writers Group Member Lynne Bendoly whose fabulous illustrations will be published in the new book Dragon Kids . Lynne had the opportunity to show the proof of the book at our last meeting. The title will be published by Publish America. That's not all the good news! E-Treasures has also agreed to publish Lynne's book, Princess and Unicorn . Lynne now has 5 publications to her name! In other news, the next meeting of the Savannah Writers Group will be held Tuesday, August 28 th at 7:00 PM at the Atlanta Bread Company, Twelve Oaks Shopping Center. That's tonight, folks! A New Location and a Guest Speaker returns!

Attention all Savannah Writers Group members, and those of you planning to attend a meeting for the first time: We have a new meeting location! That's right! Our next meeting, which is scheduled for Tuesday, August 14th Will be held at the Atlanta Bread Company located at the 12 Oaks Shopping Center off of Abercorn. This is the address: 5500 Abercorn Street, Savannah, GA Our meeting time is still 7:00 PM. We will join The Poetry Society of Georgia there! Please follow the link to visit their website.
