Welcome
Welcome to the Savannah Writers Group.
We are an informal group that meets to discuss writing technique, critique works in
progress, and provide a forum for authors and publishers wishing to
present their books and/or advice.
There is no charge to attend our group; however, we
encourage you to patronize whichever kind business allows us to use their space for our meetings.
Our meetings are at 7:00 PM on the second and fourth
Tuesdays of the month.
Past guest speakers have included paranormal romance author Suza Kates, novelist/ columnist Dr. Mark E. Murphy and audio book professional Jonah Cummings. If you are interested in speaking to our group, please let us know!
We've had discussions on poetry, writing query letters, memoir writing, effective dialogue and much more.

General Meeting Guidelines and
Standing Agenda
Meeting Site: Uncle Maddio's Pizza
Meeting Days/Time:
Meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 7:00 PM.
Membership: Membership is open to interested parties
without regard for writing experience or publication.
Dues: There are
no official dues. Any monies will be collected as needed.
Agenda: The first
hour will be devoted to the group’s business, the standing agenda (see below) or
speakers. It is the shared responsibility of all members to secure speakers.
1. The second
hour/half hour will be devoted to sharing/critiquing.
2. To ask a question, raise your
hand and be recognized by the leader or presenter.
3. Keep side conversations to a
minimum so that everyone can hear the questions and answers.
4. Please be kind with your
comments.
5. Please keep your comments
brief.
6. Most of all--have fun!
7. Self-promotion is limited to
one or two sentences describing the event and/or distributing
printed material regarding said
event. This is done at the beginning of the meeting. Scheduled speakers are, of
course, expected to self-promote.
8. Leadership of the meeting will
rotate on a volunteer basis. This role is simply one of following our set
agenda and facilitating discussion. The leader does no legwork. Members do
legwork.
9. A timekeeper will volunteer at
each meeting to keep time and inform the group when time is up for an agenda
item. Times can be re-negotiated as needed.
10. Communication: The email group
list is to be used only for purposes of the SWG. Please obtain permission
before emailing members about other topics.
Reviewing/Critiquing
Guidelines:
1.
If a reader wants feedback, he or she should
provide enough copies of his/her material for feedback – at least ten, often
more. There is no critique format; reviewers may make any suggestions on the
actual copy itself.
2.
Items for review should be no more than six
double-spaced pages in easy-to-read, twelve-point font, stapled or clipped in
order ahead of time.
3.
Readers are allotted fifteen minutes maximum
each for critique – reading and review.
4.
Writers should refrain from
defending/explaining/justifying their works. Feedback is given to be of help to
the writer and is merely one person’s opinion. It should be received as such
with a simple “thank you.”
5.
Readers who are reading for fun without a
request for feedback will share last, time permitting.
Because our group is very diverse, we must respect all forms
of writing. Begin your critique with
a positive statement about the piece. Express your opinions
in a kind manner. You do not have to like
the subject matter. Do not critique based on personal
feelings. Instead, critique objectively on elements
appropriate to the genre. If you cannot give an objective
critique, it is best to say nothing.
Reading Guidelines:
1.
If a reader would like specific questions
answered by reviewers, he or she should type those questions at the end of the
piece, leaving space for responses with each question.
2.
Readings should be no more than six
double-spaced pages in twelve-point font.
3.
At least ten copies of each manuscript are
required in order to receive a critique.
4.
After the critiquing session and depending on
available time, those who want to read their works for entertainment (without
critique) may do so.
