Exit 271: Your Georgia Writers Resource, Winter 2016
Exit 271: Your Georgia Writers Resource, Winter 2016
Exit 271: Your Georgia Writers Resource, the new digital magazine brought to you by the Georgia Writers Association.

We are asking for feature articles (1000-2000 words),  writer’s path column, short fiction (under 4000 words), poetry, and artwork for the magazine cover. All writers and artists must currently live in Georgia. Feature articles are theme related and pay $50 per article. Creative writing pieces and cover art are on a rolling basis. Writers of feature articles must first send an email query to editor@georgiawriters.org.

Feature Article submissions must be from Georgia writers. Features for the spring 2016 issue will focus on promotion. Feature article writers must query (pitch) first to editor@georgiawriters.org. We like articles that are humorous, quirky, or adventurous. We like writers that include a little research and/or give a writer’s first-hand account. Here are some ideas for an article on promotion: How do writers promote their work? What is the best way for new writers to promote themselves when they have no fans yet? Does blogging really work as a promotional tool? How do you work with traditional publishers to help promote your work? How do you work with small presses to promote your work? What can you do to promote your work if you self-publish?  Please email a query and pitch your idea for a feature article to editor@georgiawriters.org. Although we welcome queries for articles that are not related to the current theme, keep in mind that we may not be able to include them in the upcoming issue.

Short Fiction submissions must be from Georgia writers and should be under 4000 words. We like surprises. We like quirkiness. We like stories that engage our five senses and use good dialogue. Although on occasion we will publish “character sketches,” we are looking for short stories that have a strong story line. Something must happen. We prefer to see a character transform in some way. And above all, show us instead of telling us. Please refer to the Editor’s Pub column on page 28 in Exit 271’s winter 2016 issue: http://issuu.com/exit271georgiawritersresource/docs/winter-2016/28.

Poetry submissions must be from Georgia writers and may be of any length. Long poems will often pose formatting and space issues, but we will do our best to include a long poem if we love it. We not only look at the craft and content of the poem but also the way the poem visually “looks” on the page. We like strong images. We like strong verbs and nouns. We like poems about real or imagined life that include all the magic, joy, sadness, madness, and quirkiness of living. We like surprises. We like all our senses to be engaged.

Cover Artwork submissions must be from Georgia artists and may be paintings, drawings, photography, or sculpture. We prefer lots of color and movement in a work of art. If accepted for our cover, we will ask for a short bio, artist statement, and a paragraph related to the current issue’s theme. The theme for the spring issue is promotion. Please take a look at our winter artist, Melody Croft, on page 42-43 and on the cover: http://issuu.com/exit271georgiawritersresource/docs/winter-2016/42

The deadline for the spring issue of Exit 271 is March 19, 2016 but the earlier the better. If you have further questions, you may contact the digital editors at editor@georgiawriters.org
