Writing Fellows are being sought for the Fall 2012 Cohort. We are accepting applications no later than 1 August, 2012.

Deep is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides creative writing workshops for public school students in Savannah. At the end of each semester, Deep publishes students' work in an anthology-- professionally illustrated, printed, and bound.

Deep’s Writing Fellows are a group of local writers who volunteer to help Savannah’s kids tell stories. The Writing Fellows plan and lead ten writing workshops with as assigned co-teacher, in an assigned Savannah public middle school. Fellows attend a two-day training session and lesson-planning workshop prior to the start of the program. Ten 75-minute workshops take place once-per-week, after-school, some time between the hours of 2:30 and 5pm.

Specific Responsibilities:
•Attend a two-day orientation in September
•Plan with a co-teacher weekly, for ten weeks
•Co-Lead a 75-minute workshop weekly, for ten weeks
•Comment on student writing weekly, for ten weeks
•Compile student work at the end of the ten week series for publication

Qualifications:
•Bachelor’s Degree or higher
•Strong skills in oral and written communication
•An independent, curious, problem-solving attitude
•A love of reading and writing

The Deep Writing Fellows is a community of writers. In addition to the privilege of working with our amazing students, the following opportunities are also available to our community.
•A 3-part adult lecture series, led by published authors, on memoir-writing, poetry, and micro-fiction (interns required to attend 1 of 3 workshops)
•The "That Writing Lady" adult lecture series on the teaching of writing, led by our Executive Director and curriculum book author, Catherine Killingsworth (interns required to attend 1 of 3 workshops)
•Opportunity for publication in our new annual publication, "The Deep Dish"
•Critique groups

Writing Fellow Cohort Timelines:
Fall: September – December (applications due 1 Aug)
Spring: February – May (applications due 1 Jan)


All aspiring or professional writers, graduate students, professors, teachers, or other curious persons should apply. Undergraduates may apply to our highly competitive Writing Fellow Internship program.
